GOING GREEN QUILT {A COMPLETED PROJECT AND WHAT I LEARNED}

 {My CHOOSE YOUR OWN PRIZE GIVEAWAY is now closed & I will draw a winner shortly!}

As I said before in my previous post,
I gave myself permission
to try something new.

I finished my quilt
& I wanted to share a few things that I learned along the way.

My Going Green Quilt was a lesson in solid fabrics for me.

I have an entire stash of Moda Bella Solids
and I have mixed then into my other quilts.
However, I have never done anything completely out of solid fabric.

Along the way,
I learned a few things:

  •  LESSON 1: My eyes are now open to making quilts/projects out of all solid fabrics. Once I got past the shock of not having the pretty pints & patterns to look at, it sort of reminded me of coloring with crayons! Nothing but beautiful colors to work with !

  • LESSON 2: I still love prints! I will always love prints, but now I look at them in a different way. For example, I might not choose a large floral print. Instead I might go for a print that is not so busy and can relate to a broader group of fabrics.

  • LESSON 3: I am still more of a Traditional quilter. To be exact, a traditionalist who loves modern (modernish) fabrics.

  • LESSON 4:  In my mind, I wanted to create something "wonky". I tried form cutting the squares, but the traditionalist in me settled for just cutting the squares in different sizes.

When I was piecing the blocks, I really tried for wonky. I can't tell you how hard it was for me to allow the points to not line up exactly! I kept telling myself that it is "OK" for it to look off kilter! In fact, if the points matched up it was on accident.

  • LESSON 5: I like OMBRE! Ombre is a HUGE trend right now. It is huge in fashion and it is even huge in hair color! So when I chose my solid green fabrics, I choose two colors that we slightly off in color value. I did it this way so that when they were next to each other there would be a subtle effect. Here is how it turned out:

  • LESSON 6: I am no longer afraid of all solid quilt/projects! In fact, I have a few more brewing in my head right now.

Gosh I do wish that my grass matched my quilt!

I am going to leave you with one final photo:
(more on this later)
