SQUARE DANCE MINI QUILT
Finished Quilt: 12" X 12" Square
Fabric Requirements
- Various scrap fabrics
- 0.5 yards of Black fabric for quilt squares and binding
- 1 Fat Quarter or 18" X 22"piece of fabric for quilt backing
- 18" X 18" square piece of batting
Cutting Instructions
From Various Scrap Fabrics
- From various fabric scraps, cut (120) 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" squares.
From Black Fabric
- From black fabric , cut one 1 1/2" X Width Of Fabric (WOF) strip.
- Subcut the 1 1/2" strip into (20) 1 1/2" squares.
Also from black fabric:
- Cut three 2 1/2" X WOF strip.
- Subcut one 2 1/2" X 2 1/2" square from one of the strips.
- The remaining strips will be used for the binding.
Block Assembly
Note: All seams are sewn with a 1/4" seam allowance.
Step 1:
- Place the 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" blocks in the following layout.
- Take the first two 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" squares in row 1 and lay them Right Sides Together (RST).
Step 3:
- With RST, sew the two 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" squares together.
Step 4:
- Press the block open in the direction of the arrow.
- Use the pressing diagram as a guide for pressing each of the rows.
Step 5:
- With RST, lay the next 1 1/2" square on top of the last 1 1/2" square that you sewed together.
Step 6:
- Lightly press the block open.
Step 7:
- With RST, continue to sew the next 1 1/2" square to the last 1 1/2" square that you sewed together.
Step 8:
- Continue sewing the 1 1/2" squares together.
- Each row will contain (12) 1 1/2" squares.
- There will be a total of 12 rows.
Step 9:
- Refer to the quilt block arrangement diagram to ensure that your rows are in correct order.
- With RST, pin Row 1 to Row2.
- Be sure to pin the rows so that the seams match up.
- Sew the rows together.
Step 10:
- Lightly press the rows open.
Step 11:
- With RST, pin Row 3 to the block.
- Sew the rows together.
- Lightly press the rows open.
Step 12:
- Continue sewing all 12 rows together.
Step 13:- Refer to the final arrangement of the quilt top.
- Make a quilt sandwich by layering your backing fabric (wrong side up), batting, and the quilt top (right side up).
- Pin the layers together.
- Quilt your quilt sandwich using your preferred method.
- Bind your quilt using your preferred method.
Step 15:
- Enjoy your Square Dance Mini Quilt!
Although this tutorial is for a mini quilt, you could simply
construct more blocks
to create a larger quilt!
