This Little Lady Went To Market--Part 2

This Little Lady spotted another

This Little Lady loves to look at color,

so her heart went a flutter

in the Robert Kaufman booth.

that is International Quilt Market

in Salt Lake City, Utah,

to see what she could see.

(Well, this Little Lady ALMOST didn't make it

to market

because a "Not-So-Little" Little Person

got pneumonia.

Long story for another day)

Anyway, back to the story at hand:

She went to Quilt Market

to see the finest quilt fabrics in the land.

She skipped down the aisles

and shouted with glee,

when what did she spy.....

but the land of happily..... MODA.

A Closer Look

As promised ,

here is a closer look

at my Xcellence quilt

that was featured in Quilter's Home Magazine.

I used Camille's Bliss fabric line for Moda

to make my quilt.

Of course, the beautiful RED prints

caught my eye.

In fact, I added a few solids into the quilt

just to give it a

"Little Lady" personal touch.

Now my Xcellence quilt

lives on my bed.

Pssst....I ever redecorated my bedroom around

this quilt.

Here is one last photo of the quilt:

Yep that is my "not-so" Little Person

What I Learned

First, I want to thank everyone that participated

my Liz Scott giveaway!

I enjoyed reading all of your comments

and I learned a few things along the way.

It seems that the color BLUE

is the overall fan favorite color!

Here are some Moda Bella Solids in the blue range:

Like Liz,

many of you are CRAZY in LOVE with the color

turquoise! I am sure that this will make her happy!

I was surprised to learn

that purple was in a close

second place for favorite color!

I really don't have very many purple

fabrics in my stash,

so I will have to stock up on these:

The color green was in third place

as a fan favorite.

Now this is one color

that I have plenty of in my stash!

But for me.....

I will always be a

RED kinda girl!

Sugar Pop Fat Quarter G-I-V-E-A-W-A-Y!

Sugar Pop is Liz's debut fabric line for Moda

and this is why I love Sugar Pop:

The colors and designs

are so fresh and modern!

I first fell in love with

Liz Scott when I started reading her blog

Paper Pie.

I started reading her blog

before her daughter, Rylie, was born.

I was drawn to her love of vintage books

and the way that she used her Sugar Pop

fabric line to decorate her daughter's nursery.

to tell you a little bit more

about herself and her Sugar Pop fabric line.

So let me introduce you to Liz Scott:

Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you landed in the fabulous world of designing fabric.

Well, let's see. I am originally from Michigan but now I live in Los Angeles with my wonderful husband, Ryan, my daughter, Rylie, and my cat, Zipper. I am a graphic designer by trade, but a few years back I decided that my heart was really in the crafts and sewing world and I pursued fabric design: it was the perfect intersection of my skills and interests. Moda picked up my first line and like you said, it really is a fabulous world!

What is your favorite print in the Sugar Pop fabric line and why?

There are qualities about all of them that I love. For instance, I think Mod Buds is so simple and versatile. Mod Flowers is fun and boisterous and perhaps inline with my own personal aesthetic. But i think my favorite is Summer Flowers because it is fresh, feminine and feels so springy to me and spring is my favorite time of the year. I am loving all of the flowers and the longer days lately!

What is your favorite part of the day?

Early morning for sure! I get up before anyone else and the house is quiet, except for Zipper's jingly collar. There is not a sound. I make myself coffee, get dressed and read all of my favorite blogs and just get so inspired. I seem to find new blogs that interest me daily and I marvel at all of the cool and creaive peopls out there I feel so grateful to be living in this era of connection and shared information. It truly is amazing Pardon my digression... :0)

What is your favorite color?

Aqau. It always has been some form of blue, but aqua will always be #1! When I buy things, like aqua cast iron pans and dishware, my hubby is worried that I will grow tired of the color and then we will be stuck with blue dishes, but he's wrong Aqua and I are monogamous. That's not to say that I don't love ther color combos, like yellow, chartreuse, grass green, or lavender, and red It's just when it comes down to one, aqau will always win

What is next on the horison for you?

My husband and I are reorganizing our whole apartment. We've switched the studio and the bedroom. We've rearranged the furniture in the living room.We are clearing the clutter with a vengence and we are gearing up for a grage sale this weekend. And even though it is a work in progress, and everything has to get messy before it is neat again, I already feel like we live in a new place. It is amazing how energizing the exercise has been, not to mention, a tremendous happiness boost!

But enought of the boring stuff (yawn) I am also working on a new fabric line!!! It will be announced this summer and available in stores next winter. I am so excited about it and I can't wait to post some peeks on my blog! And speaking of the blog, I also hope to start blogging more. It is one of my favorite things to do and it seems to be an all too often neglected task on my list.

Mini Fabric Mosaic

I gave birth to this SPUR of the moment idea

over the weekend.

It really came out of necessity

because it rained most of the weekend

and I needed a project to occupy my

Little Person while I

got some work done.

Once again, it is simple and didn't

require very much supervision.

It is also a great way to use up your

fabric scraps!

Enjoy!

Supplies Needed:

Elmer's glue
Paint brush
Fabric scraps
Freezer paper
Paper plate

Construction:

Step 1:

Squirt the glue onto the paper plate.
Using the paint brush, "paint" the glue onto the D-U-L-L side of the freezer paper.

Step2:

Place the fabric scraps onto the damp freezer paper.
Over lap the fabric pieces into a pleasing arrangement.
Add extra glue to the edges of the fabric if necessary.
Allow the project to dry.

Step 3:

Allow your artist to sign their work!

Once again, this is a simple idea

and you never know when you will need

a simple project to occupy

you Little Ones.

Never Too Late For Love

February has come and gone

but it never too late

to share some love!

In between my crazy work schedule,

I was able to make this

mini quilt for a friend of mine.

My motto these days is:

S-I-M-P-L-E

(because I have so little time these days)

so I sat sat down and drew a SIMPLE

sketch of hearts.

Then I added the names of her children.

Next I transferred the sketch

to some Moda Bella Solid fabric.

Then I stitched away

using Lecien Variegated Embroidery Thread.

This was the first time that I have every used this

embroidery thread

and I am love with it.

(It is soft as BUTTER!)

I added a 1" border using some solid fabric.

and I ended up with the sweetest, little mini quilt.

Be My Valentine Garland

My "Be My Valentine Garland"

is a simple way to use a few of your

favorite Valentine fat quarters.

It is simple to make because

I have used my own version of

a raw edge applique technique.

Supplies Needed:

(8) Coordinating fat quarters. You will need (5) dark colored and (3) light colored fat quarters. I used Giddy by Sandy Gervais for Moda.

Scrap piece of freezer paper
1/4 Yard of Pellon Interfacing. I used a thicker Interfacing.
1/3 Yard of Moda Bella Solid Betty Brown SKU#9900-125

Cutting:

Cut (1) 5" X 5" square from the freezer paper
From each of the DARK fat quarters, cut (2) 7 1/2" X 20 1/2" rectangles. You will need a total of (10) 7 1/2" X 20 1/2" rectangles.
From each of the Light colored fat quarters, cut (1) 5 1/2" X 18 1/2" rectangle. Choose one of your favorite light colored fat quarters, and cut an extra 5 1/2" X 18 1/2" rectangle. You will need a TOTAL of (4) 5 1/2" X 18 1/2" rectangles.
From the Pellon Interfacing, cut (4) 5 1/2" X 18 1/2" rectangles.
From the Bella Solid Betty Brown, cut (4) 3" X Width Of Fabric (WOF) strips.

Construction:

Step 1: Make the heart template

Take 5" X 5" freezer paper square and fold it in half.
On the dull side of the freezer paper,draw half of a heart. Don't worry about making it too perfect!
Cut on the drawn line.
Open up your freezer paper heart.

Step 2:

Following the manufacturer's directions, adhere the Pellon Interfacing to the wrong side of a light colored 5 1/2" X 18 1/2" rectangle.
Repeat for all (4) 5 1/2" X 18 1/2" rectangles.

Step 3:

Place your freezer paper heart on top of the fabric side of the 5 1/2" X 18 1/2" rectangle.
Make sure that the dull side of the heart is facing up!
With a cool iron, iron the heart down in place.

Step 4:

Using a pencil or fabric marking pen, trace the heart onto the fabric.

Step 5:

Remove the heart.

Step 6:

With the dull side facing up, place the freezer paper heart next to the drawn heart.
Iron in place.
Remove heart.
Repeat until you have (10) hearts drawn.

Step 7:

Cut out each heart.

Step 8:

Fold the 7 1/2" X 20 1/2" rectangle in half.
Press to create a crease.
Fold the rectangle in half again.
Press to create another crease. This will create a grid which will help you line up all of your hearts.
Open up the piece of fabric.

Step 9:

Place your heart on top of the 7 1/2" X 20 1/2" rectangle.
Place the bottom tip of the heart 1 1/4" above the horizontal crease that you created.
Use the vertical crease to line up the top of your heart. I placed the "dip: in the top of the heart on the vertical crease.
Pin the heart in place.

Step 10:

Using a 1/4" seam allowance, sew around the edge of the heart.
Tip: I increased the stitch length to 3.0. I also used my walking foot because of the thickness of the heart/Pellon Interfacing. Also S-L-O-W down when you are sewing the heart. It really does help to made the rounded corners of the heart!
Another option would be to use a blanket stitch.

Step 11:

With Right Sides Together (RST), fold 7 1/2" X 20 1/2" rectangle in half.
Give it a quick press with the iron to reset your crease.
Using a 1/4" seam allowance, sew along the left and right side of the rectangle.
Leave the top open.

Step 12:

Clip the bottom corners.

Step 13:

Turn the rectangle inside out.
Push out the corners using a chopstick or an unsharpened pencil.
Press the rectangle.

Step 14:

Repeat steps 8-13 for each 7 1/2" X 20 1/2" rectangle.
Make a total of (10) heart pendants.

Step 15:

With RST, sew (2) Bella Solid Betty Brown 3" X WOF strips together.
Press the seams open.
Repeat for the other (2) Bella Solid Betty Brown 3" X WOF strips.

Step 16:

With RST, sew the (2) Bella Solid Betty Brown strips together to create one long strip.
Press the seams open.

Step 17:

Fold the top half of the strips over (about 1/2") toward the middle of the strip.
Press down the entire length of the strip.
Fold the bottom of the strip over (about 1/2") toward the middle of the strip.
Press down the entire length of the strip.

Step 18:

Fold the strip in half again.

Press down the entire length of the strip.

Step 19:

Begin pinning down the Bella Solid Betty Brown strip.
Slide your heart pendant in between the fold of the Bella Solid Betty Brown strip.
Measure in about 30" from the start of your strip before you start to place your heart pendants. This will allow you to have plenty of room at the start & end of garland. This is helpful when you are trying to hang up your Be My Valentine Garland.
I left about 1/4" gap in between each heart pendant.

Step 20:

Stitch down the center of the Bella Sold Betty Brown fabric strip.

Your Be My Valentine Garland in now complete!

Jelly Roll Challenge : Project 3

Project #3 of the Jelly Roll Challenge

is a simple table runner.

This would be perfect for just about any season/ jelly roll

and it can be created

quickly.

Supplies Needed:

(8) Coordinating jelly roll strips or (8) 2 1/2" X Width of Fabric (WOF) strips. I used 12 Days of Christmas by Kate Spain for Moda.
1/2 Yard of Bella Solid Ivory
1/2 Yard of Bella Solid Red for binding
1 Yard of Coordinating fabric for backing
3/4 yard of batting

Cutting:

From the Bella Solid Ivory, cut (8) 6 1/2" X 8 1/2" rectangles

Construction:

Step 1:

Choose (8) coordinating jelly roll strips.
With Right Sides Together (RST) , sew (2) jelly roll strips together.
Repeat for the other jelly roll strips.
Press open.

Step 2:

With RST, sew (2) jelly roll strip sets together.
Repeat and make (2) 8 1/2" X WOF strip sets.

Step 3:

Press the strip sets open.
You should have (2) strip sets.

Step 4:

From the first strip set, cut (4) 6 1/2" X 8 1/2" blocks.

Step 5:

From the second strip set, cut (3) 8 1/2" X 18 1/2" rectangles.

Step 6:

With RST, join the blocks according to the following diagram.
Press the block open.
Repeat and make a total of (4) 8 1/2" X 18 1/2" blocks.

Step 7:

With RST, join the blocks according to the following diagram.
Press the block open.
Repeat and make (3) sets.

Step 8:

With RST, join the 3 sections together.
Be sure to add the final white/jelly roll strip set/white section to the bottom.

Step 9:

Make a quilt sandwich using the quilt top, batting, and backing fabric.
Baste the layers together.
Quilt as desired.
Attach the binding to the table runner.

Voila! Your table runner is now complete.

Jelly Roll Challenge : Project 2

Project #2 of the Jelly Roll Challenge

is a simple clutch purse.

It is another quick project

and I think that I will tuck a gift card

inside each of mine.

Supplies Needed:

(5) Coordinating Jelly Roll strips or (4) 2 1/2" X Width Of Fabric (WOF) strips. Note: I used 12 days of Christmas by Kate Spain for Moda.
(1) 15" X 8 1/2" piece of batting
(1) 15 X 8 1/2" piece of coordinating fabric
1" piece of Velcro

Construction:

Step 1:

With Right Sides Together (RST) sew (2) jelly roll strips together.
Repeat for the other (2) jelly roll strips.
Press open.

Step 2:

With RST, sew the (2) jelly roll strip sets together.

Step 3:

Press the strip set open.

Step 4:

Lay your jelly roll strip set on top of the 15" X 8 1/2" piece of batting.

Step 5:

Baste the (2) layers together.
Quilt as desired.

Step 6:

Lay your 8 1/2" X 15" piece of solid fabric on top the right side of your quilted piece.

Step 7:

Pin and sew 1/4" away from the edge all the way around your fabric.

Leave a 4" opening so that you can turn your bag inside out.

Step 8:

Clip all corners so that you will have better corners when you turn the bag inside out.

Step 9:

Turn the bag inside out.
Use a chopstick to help push out the corners.

Step 10:

Press the bag and whip stitch the opening closed.

Step 11:

To create the handle:

Cut a 2 1/2" X 8 1/2" piece from the remaining jelly roll.
Fold 1/4" from the top and the bottom.

Step 12:

Fold the piece in half again and press.

Step 13:

Pin the piece.

Step 14:

Sew down the edge of the strip.

Step 15:

Take your quilted piece of fabric and fold up 5" from the bottom to find the placement of the top piece of Velcro.
Pin and sew in place.

Step 16:

Find the location of the bottom piece of Velcro by matching it to the top piece of Velcro.
Pin and sew the bottom piece of Velcro in place.

Step 17:

Determine where you want to place your handle.

Step 18:

Pin the other side in place.

Step 19:

Sew 1/4" away from both sides. Back stitch at the beginning and the end.

Voila! Your clutch purse is now complete.

(4) Jelly roll strips will make (2) clutch purses.

Jelly Roll Challenge: Project #1

Project #1 of the my jelly roll challenge

is a simple drawstring gift bag.

Supplies Needed:

(6) Coordinating jelly roll strips or (6) 2 1/2" x Width of Fabric (WOF) strips. (I used 12 Days of Christmas by Kate Spain for Moda)
(1) 12" strip of matching ribbon

Bag Construction:

Step 1:

Choose 6 coordinating jelly roll strips

Step 2:

With Right Sides Together (RST), sew (2) jelly roll strips together.
Repeat until you have (3) sets of jelly roll strips sewn together.
Strip set should measure 4 1/2" X WOF

Step 3:

Press the 4 1/2" X WOF strip sets open

Step 4:

With RST, sew (2) 4 1/2" X WOF strip sets together.

Note: Join the strip sets in opposite directions to prevent the strips from becoming "wonky". I like to use the tail ends of the thread as my guide. I simply match a long tail end to a short tail end. This way I know that I will be sewing the strip sets together in opposite directions.

Step 5:

Repeat Step 4 until you have all (3) jelly roll strip sets joined together.
The completed jelly roll strip set should measure 12 1/2" X WOF

Step 6:

Cut the jelly roll strip set into (3) 12 1/2" X 12 1/2" blocks.
Save the remaining piece for a future project.

Step 7:

Fold the top jelly roll strip in half. Press to set the fold in place.

Step 8:

Pin and sew the strip in place to create a tube for the drawstring ribbon.

Note: When sewing, I used the neighboring jelly roll strip as my guide. This helped to create a straight line.

Step 9:

Fold the 12 1/2" X 12 1/2" block in half.
Pin along the two sides.
Sew 1/4" away from the edge of the bottom of the bag and the long side of the bag.
Be sure to stop sewing just before the seam of the that tube you created for the drawstring ribbon.

Step 10:

Clip the corner edges of the bottom of the bag.

Step 11:

Turn the bag inside out.

Step 12:

Press the bag to give it a crisp, fresh look.

Step 13:

Attach a safety pin to the end of the drawstring ribbon.
Using the safety pin, thread the ribbon through the tube that you created.

Pull the drawstring ribbon to close the bag.

Voila! You are now done creating your drawstring gift bag. All you have to do is add the goodies!

Note: (6) jelly roll strips will yield 3 drawstring gift bags.

Journey Of A Quilt: The Finish

The rain clouds parted

Journey Of A Quilt: Part 1

I finally got a day off from work

and I designated part of the day "ME" time.

I sat down in front of my sewing machine

and went to work on this:

However, when I opened up the quilt top,

I just wasn't satisfied with the way that it looked.

Something just wasn't right,

so I took the quilt top outside to get

a fresh look at it.

I decided that I wanted the quilt to be a little bit longer.

I added a 5" strip of fabric to the top and bottom of the quilt.

Later on that evening,

I sat down to attempt the quilting.

Shortly after I started,

I looked up and noticed that my Little Person had joined me.

When it was his bed time,

he sent reinforcements to keep me company.

The quilting is done.

The binding is done.

I just need to go outside and take a picture of the quilt.

(Terrible right?)

Wow! I can't believe that the Holiday

season is almost upon us.

It seems like I just took down all of my

Christmas decorations!

So with the end of the year rapidly upon us,

I have decided that I need to comeplete

my unfinished projects.

(This way Santa will be pleased with all of my work

and he will bring me more fabric

to use for next year. Hint, Hint)

I am determined to finish this quilt:

I started it back here.

I was making steady progress on the quilt

here, here, here, and here.

For some reason, it got put away

and it was "forgotten" until yesterday.

Hopefully between working at my new job

and caring for a sick Little Person,

it will be completed soon!

(This is my favorite American Jane for Moda print!)

My last goal is to complete 10 more Grandmother Flowers!

I am trying to reach 100 completed flowers before the

end of the year.

I am sooooo close!

Journey Of A Quilt : The Finish

I recently decided to re-enter

the workforce on a part time basis.

The decision was purely to satisfy my need

to be around people

(other than my Little Person everyday).

Once I made the decision,

I had a job offer within two days

and I started work immediately!

So with that being said,

now I truly cherish EVERY moment that I get to spend

in front of my sewing machine!

I finally sat down and finished sewing on the

binding of my SNIPPETS quilt.

Here is what my latest creation looks like:

I love how the 1 inch strips breaks up the design.

I used Fig Tree fabric for the backing.

When I made this quilt, I wasn't sure what

I was going to do with it.

However, the other day I laid it down on top

of my sewing machine

and it looked pretty good.

So, I think that I will add some ties to

the sides of it

and turn it into a sewing machine cover.

(I'll let you know how it turns out!)

Journey Of A Quilt: Part 3

Thanks to the holiday (Veterans' Day),

the journey of my quilt was able to continue.

I decided on a simple layout:

Since this is a quilt made out of scraps,

I threw in 1 1/2" strips made from leftover scraps.

I love how the strips break up the row of blocks

while adding just enough to the simple layout.

Next I added a simple quilting design.

I am obsessed with scrappy binding.

I took more leftover scraps and cut them into 2 1/2" strips.

The result is this lovely roll of binding:

Now all that I need to do is sit down,

choose something from my TiVo list,

and sew on the binding.

Journey Of A Quilt : Part 2

The stars aligned (which rarely happens)

and I was able to continue

working on my scrappy quilt.

I have decided to name it SNIPPETS

since it is made out of my leftover scraps

from a previous project.

The journey towards becoming a quilt

continued with this:

For some reason

joining the (80) 2 1/2" Half Square Triangles (HST)

took longer than I thought.

(It must have been all of the distractions.)

Then I married the blocks together

and created (40) 4 1/2" blocks.

Now I just have to decide on a layout

for the blocks

but that will have to wait until tomorrow

because motherhood is calling.

Journey Of A Quilt: Part 1

I thought that it would be nice

to show the journey that

my leftover scraps took toward becoming

a quilt.

It all began by turning

my scraps into small Half Square Triangles (HST).

Then came the dreaded task of getting rid of those

pesty "tails" .

When all was said and done,

I had 80 HST.

Now all I have to do is

pin them together, sew,

and press them open.

A Healthy Appreciation

It is no secret that I have a healthy appreciation

(AKA-Obsession)

with

Print, Paper, and Pattern!

So it was no surprise when I was walking

down the aisle

and noticed/gravitated toward these:

Maybe it was the bold colors,

or the paisley print.

Maybe it was the fact that it reminded

me of fabric.

I think that the real reason why I bought them was because of this:

The tiny cross-hatching that is embossed

on the cover

which reminded me of

quilting!

So for all of the great marketing minds

out there,

I will buy ANYTHING that

reminds me of QUILTS!

Please tell me that I am not the only one out

there with this HEALTHY APPRECIATION.

Hexagon Update

Since Project Runway is over (insert sigh),

I have been catching up on all of

my regular TV shows.

This means that I have plenty of time

to work on my hexagons.

(My last update was here and here.)

This week I sat down and completed

10 more Grandmother's Flowers.

I now have a total of

82 Grandmother Flowers

completed to date.

Total of 574 hexagons used.

Once I reach 100 completed flowers

I will begin to attach them together.

Maybe, just maybe,

I will be able to start attaching them together

before the end of the year.

Each flower is beautiful on its own,

but I can't watch to see how

they all look together.

So here is a little bit about Melanie in her own words:

Tell us about yourself and how you got started sewing/quilting.

I started sewing at a very young age because my mom sews. She would make us matching outfits and stuff like that. My grandmother (95 years old) is the quilter of the family. She still completes multiple quilts each year. In high school, I had made several jean/flannel quilts. Simple squares, tied with yarn ... nothing very fancy. Then after I went to college, I decided one summer to make a sampler block quilt. So I bought a book and learned about templates and 1/4" seams. I machine pieced my quilt (a queen size) but decided I needed to be true to the tradition of quilting and hand quilt it. On my! It was totally overwhelming! My grandma showed me how to do little stitches- and I was terrible at it! It took me forever to ... and so finally about 10 years later, I hired someone to finish it for me so that my family could actually use the quilt! Looking back at it, the quilt is no longer my style but I love that we can use it.

What lead you to open your own store?

Well, basically, I'm crazy! I started to sell my own items several years ago. People were always asking me where I got my fabric. Several things influenced my store- so when we sold our house, I used some of the money to start the store.

What types of fabrics are you drawn to?

I find that my fabric styles definately shift over time. I am usually an earthtone girl...love browns and greens and yellows (not sunny). I love sewing for my daughter and find I can use anything from tonals to bright prints for her clothing. For quilts, I love things that will switch from room to room rather than focusing on making something for a particular room. I've also done quilts for each of my kids first birthdays...that was fun. I want to do that for my nieces and nephews too!

What kind of projects are you currently working on?

Right now I am working on a few projects that aren't ready to be revealed yet! Isn't that mean! I am also trying to finish up a couple of outfits for a show that I have next week. I also have a Make Life quilt that is completely pieced and I just need to sandwich and do the free motion quilting!

What is your favorite fabric line and why?

Gosh, a favorite is so hard to choose! I love Joel Dewberry's Modern Meadow. I am also excited about Patty Young's new line that is coming out... and Kate Spain is my favorite Moda designer right now (I love her new line that is coming out in January).

What project (quilting or non-quilting) would you like to tackle at some point in the future?

My goal this past year has been to sew more for myself, which has been great. BUT I have not made myself pants (besides PJ pants) and with the extra curves motherhood has given me, the whole idea of flattering pants is kind of scary to me (I use my kids as an excuse, but let's be honest, the donuts don't help much)! So maybe 2011 will be the year of the perfect pants!

The Scrappy Binding

I love to save every piece of fabric.

I have a small bucket that is filled with my

left over jelly roll strips.

I have been saving them to someday make

another scrappy quilt.

However, for my Charming Stars : Fig Tree Version,

I decided to dig into my bucket and

make a scrappy binding

out of my left over Fig Tree jelly roll strips

from a past project

Here is what they looked like once

I attached all of them together.

The Moda Bake Shop has a great tutorial on using

jelly roll strips to make binding. The tutorial

can be found here.

Here is a closer look at my scrappy binding:

I just love to see how the scrappy binding creates

a rainbow of yumminess.

Charming Stars : The Fig Tree Version

As I promised you earlier,

here is the Fig Tree version of my

Charming Stars Quilt:

This version is a little bit different from my original version.

After all, I can't have two quilts that are exactly alike!

This time I only used two charm packs

from the fabric line Patisserie by Fig Tree for Moda.

My original recipe calls for three charm packs.

This meant that I would have (9) 13.5" X 13.5" blocks

instead of the (16) blocks that were in my

original version.

Also, I could not decide on a border fabric,

so I chose to eliminate the outer border.

This way the sashing border becomes

the order border.

Charming Stars: The Fig Tree Version

SPOOK-TACULAR NIGHT: A Charm Pack Tutorial (Part 2)

This is a charm pack friendly tutorial. For the fabric requirements and cutting instructions, check out Part 1 of this tutorial here.

In Part 2 of this tutorial, we will be quickly constructing and assembling the quick top. So grab your cut fabrics and let's start "spooking"!

Block Construction

Note: All seams are a 1/4". Press all seams to one side.

Step 1:

Gather your Moda Bella Solid Stone 2 7/8" X 2 7/8" squares

Lay your ruler from corner to corner on the 2 7/8" X 2 7/8 squares.

Step 2 :

Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on each of the 2 7/8" X 2 7/8" squares.

Step 3:

With Rigth Sides Together (RST), layer a 2 7/8" X 2 7/8" square on top of a 5" X 5" charm square.

Step 4:

Using your sewing machine, stitch on the diagonal line.

Step 5:

Place the 1/4" mark of your ruler on the diagonal line that you just stitched.

Step 6:

Using you rotary cutter, trim 1/4" away from the diagonal line.

Step 7:

Press the block open.
The block should measure 5" X 5".
Repeat and make a total of (40) 5" X 5" blocks.

Step 8:

Layout the charm squares as shown below.

Step 9:

With RST, layer a 5" X 5" charm square on top of another 5" X5" charm square.
Stitch the blocks together.
Press the block open.
The block should measure 5" X 9 1/2".
Repeat and make a total of (20) 5" x 9 1/2" blocks.

Step 10:

Layout the blocks as shown.
With RST, layer a 5" X 9 1/2" rectangle on top of another 5" X 9 1/2" rectangle.
Stitch the blocks together.
Press the block open.
Block should measure 9 1/2" X 9 1/2"
Repeat and make a total of (10) 9 1/2" X 9 1/2" blocks.
Finished block size : 9 " X 9"

Step 11:

You are now ready to assemble your blocks. Refer to the photos and diagrams for your block placement.
Layout the blocks into 3 rows.
Row 1 & Row 3 will each contain (4) 9 1/2" X 9 1/2" blocks. Place a 1 1/2" X 9 1/2" rectangle between each block.
Row 2 will contain (2) 9 1/2" X 9 1/2" blocks. Place the 9 1/2" X 21 1/2" rectangle between the two blocks.

Step 12:

Make a quilt sandwhich and baste the layers together.
Quilt as desired.
Bind the quilt using your favorite method.

SPOOKTACULAR NIGHT

Finished Block Size: 9" X 9"

SPOOK-TACULAR NIGHT: A Charm Pack Tutorial (Part 1)

Lately I have been obsessed with Charm Packs. If you look here, you will see just how obsessed I am with Charm Packs!

Halloween is right around the corner and I wanted to create a SIMPLE quilt that could be created quickly and be done with a minimal amount of cutting. SPOOK-TACULAR NIGHT can literally be made in a few hours, so grab your favorite Halloween Charm Pack and let's get "spooking"!

Fabric Requirements

(1) Spook-tacular Charm Pack or (40) 5 " squares

1 1/2 yards of Moda Bella Solid: Stone- SKU# 9900-128

3/4 Yard of Moda Bella Solid : Black -SKU 990-99 for the borders & binding

1 3/4 Yards of Backing Fabric

Cutting Instructions

From Moda Bella Solid Stone, cut:

(3) 2 7/8" X Width of Fabric (WOF) strips.
Sub cut each strip into 2 7/8" X 2 7/8" squares.
You will need a total of (40) 2 7/8" X 2 7/8" squares.

Also from the Bella Solid Stone, cut:

(2) 1 1/2" X WOF strips.
Sub cut each strip into 1 1/2" X 9 1/2" rectangles.
You will need a total of (6) 1 1/2" X 9 1/2" rectangles.

Also from the Moda Bella Solid Stone, cut:

(2) 1 1/2" X 29 1/2" strips for the sashing
(2) 1 1/2" X 39 1/2" strips for the sashing
(2) 1 1/2" X 41 1/2" strips for the sashing

Finally, from the Moda Bella Solid Stone, cut

(1) 9 1/2" X 21 1/2" rectangle for the center of the quilt

From the Moda Bella Solid Black, cut:

(2) 2 " X 31 1/2" strips for the quilt borders
(2) 2" X 44 1/2" strips for the quilt borders

Please note:

This pattern requires (40) 5" charm squares. The Spooktacular Charm Pack contained (2) Off-white squares that did not match the Bella Solid Stone background fabric. I dug into my stash and replaced these squares. Here is what I came up with:

In Part 2 of the tutorial, we will quickly construct the blocks and assemble the quilt top.

There is nothing like beautiful fabrics to put you in the

I really love the color pallete in this fabric line.

In fact I could see an entire Halloween party
